Honorable Mention: Linebacker

This is more of a new position battle to watch as Ed Davis suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first full practice in pads last week.

There are plenty of guys who could fill in at the ‘money’ linebacker position in Davis’ absence — even a couple who are new to the program this season.

Drake Martinez is one of those newcomers who is a JUCO transfer who was originally committed to Nebraska out of high school in 2013 to play with his brother, quarterback Taylor Martinez. Drake has put in the work this offseason to fit in with the defense and he’s making a great impression.

T.J. Harrell is a redshirt freshman who is currently Darien Harris’ backup at the ‘Star’ position and he, along with Martinez and true freshman Andrew Dowell, could switch positions to help the team.

Shane Jones and Jon Reschke were both highly-regarded out of high school in 2013 and the sophomores have both been waiting for their chance to shine on the defensive side of the ball. As with the other guys mentioned, they could move over to ‘Star’ linebacker.

Tyriq Thompson is another name to watch as the true freshman was fourth at ‘money’ linebacker on the first release of the 2015 depth chart weeks ago.

However, I think it will end up being sophomore linebacker Chris Frey’s job to lose.
