Any Spartan fan who has been paying attention to the football program in the Mark Dantonio era knows just how valuable special teams are to the head coach. He uses them to perfection and it’s a point of pride for him as well.

  • Guys like Aaron Bates, Mike Geiger and the latest, Mike Sadler, have all been involved in some big-time plays that have defined seasons. Although Geiger is still with the program and will look to also make a serious name for himself this season, he still has been a crucial player for the special teams.

Everyone has been sad to see punter Mike Sadler go as he was a fantastic personality off the field and a great talent on the field.

It’s not often you call a punter a “great talent” but he had a knack for driving the ball inside the 20-yard-line of opponents, setting up long drives.

Now it’s redshirt freshman Jake Hartbarger’s turn to become a household name for Spartan special teams.

The punting unit may not be the same without Sadler, who was also involved in some nifty trick plays, but Hartbarger has every bit the same amount of talent.

It’s a new era with of punting with Hartbarger and he will impress. He comes in as the No. 1 high school punter for the 2014 recruiting class and let’s just hope he can pull off whatever Dantonio throws his way.
