Happy NFL roster cut day to all who celebrate. We’re about to learn the fate of several former Michigan State players who are vying for roster spots, including guys like Joe Bachie, Luke Newman, and Jack Velling, among others.
Former Michigan State stars have been receiving some good news already as Kirk Cousins has been named the Raiders’ starter and Velling put himself in a decent spot for one of the Falcons’ final roster spots. Bachie, too, has been solid enough through training camp that the Lions may consider utilizing a roster spot on him.
There are some other former Michigan State stars who have kind of flown under the radar during the preseason who are projected to make initial 53-man rosters to begin 2026.
According to Andrew Destin of The Athletic, a couple of former Michigan State receivers are projected to make the Seahawks’ 53-man roster while another is a top cut candidate.
Montorie Foster Jr. and Cody White are both projected to make the Seahawks’ roster after training camp and the preseason, beating out former Spartan turned UNLV star Ricky White. They will be battling for WR4 targets behind guys like Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Cooper Kupp, and Rashid Shaheed.
The names might be surprising considering we haven’t heard a lot about White since he left Michigan State after Mark Dantonio’s final season in 2019 but he stood out in the preseason. White hauled in a team-high three catches for 69 yards in the Seahawks’ preseason finale. He’s been with the Seahawks since 2023, spending time buried on the depth chart. He has five catches for 134 yards and a touchdown over the past two seasons.
Foster, on the other hand, was selling houses a couple of months ago, and now he finds himself in line to make a roster spot with the Seahawks.
This would be a pleasant surprise on Sunday afternoon.
Michigan State has WRs littered across the NFL
Recruiting receivers shouldn’t be much of a problem for Courtney Hawkins and Michigan State and all you have to do is look at how many former Spartan receivers are in the league.
If this projection holds and White and Foster make the Seahawks’ roster, the former Spartan receivers in the NFL will look like this:
- Jayden Reed, Packers
- Jalen Nailor, Raiders
- Montorie Foster Jr., Seahawks
- Cody White, Seahawks
- Keon Coleman, Bills (Hawkins product)
- Germie Bernard, Steelers (another Hawkins product)
Six receivers in the NFL and all but White being products of Hawkins should only help Michigan State’s recruiting at that position. How many receivers coaches can say that they’ve had a helping hand in five different receivers making it to the NFL?
Michigan State is far from WRU, but it’s making a case to be one of the top destinations for wideouts.
