Michigan State recruiting made the top schools list of three-star 2018 defensive end James Head from Miami, Fla.

Everyone knows by now that Michigan State’s defensive line has been thinned out over the past few years. That’s why making the top seven list for three-star defensive end James Head from Miami, Fla., was refreshing news.

The Spartans made the cut for the three-star defensive end from Miami last Friday. Who else made the list?

Michigan State was the latest to offer the three-star defensive end, but the Spartans still made the cut last weekend. His list also includes Baylor, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Indiana, Tennessee and Oregon. It’s a wide range of programs and Michigan State is just one of two Big Ten squads on it.

The Spartans could use some depth on the defensive line, especially with a guy like Head. He is 6-foot-5 and about 215 pounds, but if he adds a little weight, he would be a perfect edge rusher for MSU.

Head is usually posted up at the standing end position and he has a knack for making opposing quarterbacks uncomfortable. Not only is he tough to see over, but when he locates the ball, he’s quick to make a play on the ball-carrier. If Ken Mannie can get him into the weight room early on, he will be a force.

The athletic end is ranked No. 652 overall in the class and as the 26th-best strong-side defensive end, according to 247Sports. The Spartans have a good shot at landing him, especially if he can get to campus. He was offered on May 1.
