Who would you say is the best Spartan in the Mark Dantonio era? For the Michigan State head coach, the answer is pretty obvious. For fans, that might not be the case.

In an interview on Thursday, the Spartans’ head coach was asked who the best player he ever coached at Michigan State was. His answer? Kirk Cousins.

Fans would argue that a number of players could be deserving of the top spot. In fact, the best players in the Dantonio era may have come through the program most recently such as Connor Cook, Jack Conklin and Trae Waynes. You also have guys like Darqueze Dennard, Le’Veon Bell and Shilique Calhoun.

It’s safe to say that Dantonio had plenty of elite players to choose from. Can’t go wrong with a guy who passed for 9,131 yards and 66 touchdowns while also leading the Spartans to their first bowl win under Dantonio. Cook has since surpassed his career totals.

Michigan State went from an average program to a top-tier Big Ten football school under Cousins and his leadership and hard-working attitude really personified what it means to be a Spartan.

This makes Dantonio’s comparison of Brian Lewerke to Cousins that much more impressive. If the head coach thinks Lewerke is most comparable to Cousins, then the Spartans are in good hands for the 2017 season.
