Michigan State recruiting has offered four-star 2018 linebacker Dax Hollifield from Shelby, N.C.

Known for developing some elite linebackers over the past few years, Michigan State offered an elite inside linebacker in the 2018 class last week in Dax Hollifield. The four-star from Shelby, N.C., is already on the radar of dozens of programs, but Michigan State entered its name into the race.

Mark Dantonio has been making it his mission to add some linebacker depth in the 2018 and 2019 classes, extending multiple offers over the past couple of weeks. Hollifield, though, might be the top guy who he offered.

The Spartans have had success with linebackers over the years, sending guys like Max Bullough and Greg Jones to the NFL, but others have made names for themselves such as Taiwan Jones, Denicos Allen, Darien Harris and Riley Bullough. Could Hollifield be next?

Dax is an instinctual player and that’s exactly what you want at the middle linebacker spot. Riley Bullough was always good in that regard and Max Bullough was before him. He is strong when bursting through the line and getting to the ball-carrier, often making sure no one slows him down.

Getting into the running this late for an elite linebacker would almost certainly call for an immediate visit just to keep his interest. If he takes a trip to East Lansing over the summer, then the Spartans have a fighting chance. If not, don’t hold your breath.

Hollifield is ranked the No. 52 recruit in the class and the third-best inside linebacker, according to 247Sports. Schools like Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Notre Dame and North Carolina seem to be holding his attention right now. However, LSU, Alabama, Florida State, Wake Forest and Stanford all made his top nine, as well, a couple months ago.
