Michigan State recruiting has been showing serious interest in four-star 2018 center Trevion Williams from Sterling Heights, Mich.

Missing on Caleb Swanigan two years ago hurt. Michigan State fans will deny it, but losing out on him even after he committed to the Spartans was tough. He’s molded into one of the top players in college basketball, but there is a similar player who the Spartans are after in the 2018 class.

His name is Trevion Williams and he’s a four-star center from nearby Sterling Heights, Mich. Recently, Michigan State assistant Dwayne Stephens stopped by to watch him work out at a local gym.

For Williams, being an all-around player is something he aspires to be. He has already worked on developing a jump shot, but he knows that he’s not done growing as a player yet.

“Oh yeah, I can shoot from anywhere but there is always room for improvement,” Williams said.

That’s the type of attitude that would fit well into a Tom Izzo-coached system. Players always hungry to improve and that’s exactly what drew Miles Bridges back to Michigan State for his sophomore year.

The Spartans are keeping a close eye on Williams and with a handful of scholarships likely to be available in 2018, he’s the perfect type of player to complement current pledges Foster Loyer and Thomas Kithier.

As for a visit, it’s in the works.

“It’s a little early because I feel as if I haven’t been up to visit that much but I think that will change in a short amount of time,” Williams said. “I have talked to Coach DJ about everything and he said I can come up anytime.”

What does he like about Michigan State? Besides growing up close to the program, he’s uttered the same phrase that everyone seems to use when talking about the Spartans: family.

“The fact that no matter who comes, they always treat everyone like family,” Williams said.

Izzo loves players that can mold into the system he’s created and developed. He does, however, look for certain types of players and his style isn’t for everyone.

However, Williams can see himself in the green and white.

“Yes, I could (see myself at MSU) and because I believe Coach Izzo likes big men who are versatile,” Williams said. “Also, big men that can rebound and pass.”

Williams is ranked the No. 62 recruit in the 2018 class as well as the third-best center in the country, according to the 247Sports‘ composite. He said that a decision will come when it feels right. He’s been offered by the likes of Xavier, UNLV and Illinois as well.
