What kind of player did Michigan State just land in 4-star C Jaydn Jenkins?

Michigan State’s 2027 recruiting class may have just wrapped up on Wednesday with the commitment of four-star center Jaydn Jenkins.

The four-star from Pennsylvania becomes the second Grind Week visitor to commit to the Spartans in just this class alone. He visited with five-star point guard Antonio Pemberton and both guys have since committed to Tom Izzo and the Spartans.

Considering Izzo just hosted top-40 center Kamsi Awaka for an official, he likely put the ball in the two center targets’ court and basically said “first one to commit gets the last spot”.

Jenkins didn’t waste much time after his visit and Awaka’s to make his Michigan State commitment official and he now joins one of the best recruiting classes in the nation. He may not be as highly rated as Awaka, but Jenkins is every bit as talented.

The 2027 class’ No. 60 recruit is a top-tier rim protector with length, quickness for his frame, and he has a motor that Izzo has to love. His offensive game may not be where it needs to be just yet, but that’s going to be Izzo’s first homework assignment when he gets to campus.

DK on Twitter does a really good job of diving into film and analyzing each commit’s game. He posted a short clip of Jenkins on both ends of the floor and it looks like he’s got good length and it seems to really bother defenders and he moves well for his size. Unfortunately, he may be a bit of a project on the offensive end because his shot isn’t consistent or fluid enough yet to really stretch the floor.

A good point that DK brings up from the highlight video that he shared is that Jenkins has a frame that needs to fill out. He could afford to add some mass to his 6-10, 220-pound frame. Valid observation and completely justified. After watching Xavier Booker come in with a ton of hype but a frame that couldn’t exactly hang in the post in the Big Ten, Michigan State fans are rightfully scarred.

Jenkins at least looks much more polished on the defensive end than Booker was but he’s not yet a floor-stretcher. His potential is sky-high, especially if he can develop a jumper.

Tom Izzo, you sly dog

If this ends up being a two-man recruiting class, Izzo was able to address two major needs with guys who can play at an elite level. Jenkins can be that rim-runner that Izzo loves who can get up and down the floor. He wants a big with athleticism and length who can be a lob threat on every pick-and-roll.

Pemberton was one of the best point guards in the 2027 class and Izzo was staring directly at a recruiting battle against Kansas, Ohio State, Tennessee, UCLA, Alabama, and Auburn (just a few of his offers), and liked his chances enough to lock the five-star in for a coveted Grind Week visit. If Izzo is going all-in on a point guard, it must mean he sees something really special.

Just look at Izzo’s track record with elite college point guards. Not only that, but he’s piecing together a legendary stretch of point guards that could lead him back to the promised land.

Jeremy Fears to Carlos Medlock Jr. to Pemberton to Mateen Cleaves Jr. would be a picture-perfect way for Izzo to finally end that national title drought and ride off into the sunset.

This 2027 class put the Hall of Famer one step closer to that storybook ending.
