Tick tock. Jeremy Fears Jr. is feeling the clock wind down on a decision that’s going to not only impact his future but also affect the future of Michigan State basketball.
Tom Izzo and the Spartans will be monitoring closely as Fears navigates the draft process and either decides to stay in or come back to Michigan State for at least one more year. If he stays in, the Hall of Fame head coach will have been a little blindsided but he’ll then require a new PG1 and he may also have to go hunting for a backup. If he comes back, the Spartans avoided disaster.
Michigan State has one of the best rosters in the country entering the 2026-27 season and it was supposed to feature Fears, but if he decides that the NBA can’t wait, that knocks it down from a top-five team to one that maybe cracks the top 20.
A lot is riding on this upcoming decision.
And we’re officially in the home stretch. There are less than three full days left until the draft decision deadline which means that we’re less than 72 hours from finally realizing what Michigan State’s final 2026-27 roster will look like. Crazy.
Will Jeremy Fears Jr. bet on himself?
Everyone loves a confident prospect and I think that’s what makes Fears so special as a player. He’s not only confident but he’s also a terrific leader who makes everyone around him better. Fears is special and that’s why Michigan State fans are terrified of losing him.
He’s so confident that he might just bet on himself when no one else will.
I’m not saying that Fears isn’t good enough to be drafted, but I am alluding to the fact that he’s not in a single NBA mock entering the final month before the draft. Fears said that it would take a first-round draft grade in order to remain in instead of coming back for another season. The only thing that could pry him away from a national title pursuit is a first-round pick.
According to 100 percent of mocks, that’s not happening.
Also, according to a pool of 10 NBA executives, he’s better off deciding to return to Michigan State instead of staying in. The NBA execs don’t believe he’s ready either.
So will he bet on himself like Marcus Taylor did almost 25 years ago? I think that’s everyone is hoping he makes the choice that will assure him a longer NBA career. I’ll let you guess which route that is.
