One of the most important days of a Michigan State basketball offseason in years is upon us. Every Spartan hoops fan is going to be glued to their phone on Wednesday as two major announcements are expected that will affect Michigan State.
The first is the most obvious one. Jeremy Fears Jr. has a massive decision to make. Will he enter the NBA draft or return for another season in East Lansing. He has until 11:59 p.m. ET on Wednesday to make a decision about his future and while many are optimistic that he’ll return, you just never know these days. I think the NIL aspect will help Michigan State’s chances.
The second major announcements is the final trimming of the Team USA men’s U18 roster from 19 to 12. We’ll know on Wednesday if Spartan signees Ethan Taylor and Jasiah Jervis will be representing Team USA at the FIBA AmeriCup at the beginning of June.
I can only assume that Jervis and Taylor making the final roster would help their growth and development before stepping foot on campus. That would be huge.
There’s no specific timetable for either of these announcements, so make sure to hammer that refresh button on Twitter all day long. For those of us who have been waiting for the Fears announcement for two weeks now, the next 24 hours are going to feel like a decade.
Wednesday could be a rollercoaster for Tom Izzo, MSU
There’s a chance that Wednesday is a huge day of celebration for Michigan State and Izzo but there’s also a chance that it’s one of those days that Spartan fans will soon want to forget.
Fears announcing his return would make it a great day no matter what happens with Jervis and Taylor, but if they also make the Team USA roster, couches may be burned. A Fears return coupled with Jervis and Taylor making the Team USA roster ahead of the FIBA AmeriCup would launch the vibes into the stratosphere as summer gets off to an incredible start.
However, there’s a chance that Fears leaves and neither Spartan incoming freshman makes the Team USA roster. One incoming freshman could make the roster and the other could be cut which also wouldn’t be terrible, but if that follows a negative Fears decision, it won’t much matter to Spartan fans.
Buckle up, folks, next 24 hours are about to be a whirlwind.
