Trey Fort remains the only undrafted Spartan without a new NBA home

Someone will take a chance on Trey Fort in the Summer League.

Trey Fort had quite the college career which was capped off in East Lansing with Michigan State.

Although he was only in East Lansing for a year, Fort called it home and he was welcomed with open arms even when he may have felt like an outcast. He was constantly in Tom Izzo’s doghouse for whatever reason and he played just 10.2 minutes per game after being projected as the team’s starting shooting guard when the season tipped off.

Fort’s time in East Lansing wasn’t what he expected, but he still managed to carve out a role and he ended up getting hot in the NCAA Tournament, averaging just under eight points per game and scoring a huge 12 against Louisville in round two.

Without Fort’s sudden resurgence, Michigan State may not have made the Sweet 16. Heck, if he cut into Denham Wojcik’s minutes in the UConn game a little more, the Spartans may have made a second straight Elite Eight — he played just six minutes and scored four points in a 67-63 loss.

Fort finished his line season in East Lansing averaging 4.2 points and 1.3 rebounds and shot just 35 percent from the floor and from three. His defense was a main reason he didn’t play a ton.

Still, he has been prepping for a potential NBA future. After going undrafted, Fort was probably hoping for the same type of luck that Carson Cooper and Jaxon Kohler experienced.

Unfortunately, he remains the only undrafted Spartan without an NBA home as of Thursday afternoon. Cooper signed with the Grizzlies and Kohler is with the Jazz.

There’s still a lot of work to do.

Trey Fort will have to hope for an NBA Summer League invite

There’s a non-zero chance that Fort’s agent is already on the phone with overseas teams trying to strike up a deal for the two-guard scoring threat.

Izzo should be able to vouch for Fort in order to land him on a Summer League team. Maybe he can give Mat Ishbia, Tom Gores, or Dan Gilbert a call to get him on the Suns, Pistons, or Cavaliers for NBA Summer League action next month.

Fort has decent size for a two-guard at 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds and he has the skillset to impress some scouts. He’s a streaky shooter, however, which isn’t great when you’re not known for defense.

Hopefully we see Fort signing a Summer League contract within the next couple of weeks.
