Tre Holloman’s decision to leave Michigan State this past offseason was both a shock and a disappointment. Fans felt like they had enough to compete for another Big Ten title in 2025-26, but Holloman’s absence would obviously be felt a little bit.
No one expected it to be felt this much through just three games, though.
Holloman was a plus shooter and a solid ball-handler who could give Jeremy Fears Jr. the rest he needs so he doesn’t play 30-35 minutes per game. Unfortunately, he has to be on the floor for Michigan State or the offense just falls apart. That part alone makes Spartan fans miss Holloman.
However, his production through two weeks with NC State has fans missing him a little extra — and I’m sure his teammates and Tom Izzo miss him, too.
Through two weeks, Michigan State is shooting just over 20 percent from 3-point range (13-for-60), and Holloman is connecting on 50 percent of his long-range jumpers. That is obviously a huge reason that he’s missed by the Spartans, but also because he seems to be going off every game for the Wolfpack.
Holloman scored 29 through his first two games with just seven assists to five turnovers, but after getting ejected against UNC Greensboro (on a weak call), he dropped 25 against VCU, shooting 50 percent from the floor while hitting three deep shots — a fourth of the number of threes Michigan State has hit as a team this year.
Hopefully Kur Teng, Jordan Scott, and/or Trey Fort step up to fill that two-guard spot effectively this season, but right now, it feels like Holloman has left a massive void in the lineup.
