Tre Holloman made a big decision on Saturday afternoon that actually gives Michigan State more hope for Carson Cooper’s potential fifth year of eligibility.
The former Spartan guard who controversially decided to transfer last offseason following his junior year with Michigan State in which he won the Big Ten and made it to the Elite Eight has once again decided to hit the portal in search of a new home.
Why does Holloman hitting the portal give Michigan State fans hope for a Cooper return? Because the two came to East Lansing in the same recruiting class and if one gets a waiver, you’d have to think that the other, too, would have a case to return to college basketball.
Think about it, if Holloman gets a fifth year, how could the NCAA tell Cooper no? Holloman decided to leave Michigan State on his own and you can’t get a harship waiver after your eligibility is used up, so the NCAA would have to make an exception for Cooper, too. You can’t exactly grant a fifth year for one and not the other when both have had basically the same college experience.
Will the NCAA even grant a fifth year to Holloman? I’m slightly doubtful that happens but the fact that it’s even being talked about feels like a positive development.
Michigan State fans would take either Cooper or Jaxon Kohler back, but the timing of the NCAA’s decision on a five-year eligibility window could hold everything up.
Carson Cooper would be a top portal center
Surprisingly, I’ve seen some Michigan State fans scoffing at the idea of bringing Cooper back for a fifth year and it’s really confusing to me. Why wouldn’t you want to bring back a center with starting experience for a Big Ten team who averaged 11.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game last year? It makes no sense.
If Cooper hit the portal and got a transfer ranking and then came back, Michigan State fans would be thrilled because he’d be listed as one of the top centers in the portal.
Tom Izzo would love to get Cooper back and he’s been hinting at that all season long. Kohler, too, would have a decent case especially since he missed time with an injury. Either one returning for a fifth year would make all of this transfer portal chaos from the last two weeks well worth it.
