Tom Izzo sounds off on ‘absolutely ridiculous’ Brendan Sorsby controversy

We all expected this to be Tom Izzo’s stance.

If you’ve been even somewhat plugged into the college football landscape this summer, you’ve probably already heard about the Brendan Sorsby situation at Texas Tech.

Tom Izzo certainly has.

Obviously Izzo is going to know about the current biggest story in college athletics and his opinion on the matter is going to be pretty obvious.

In case you’re unaware, the NCAA ruled Sorsby, a Cincinnati quarterback transfer and the No. 2 overall transfer in the portal, ineligible for the 2026 season after he was found guilty of making tens of thousands of dollars worth of sports bets, including some that involved teams that he played for.

Sorsby tried to play it off like it wasn’t a big deal, saying that he made the bets while he was at Indiana in order to feel closer to his team. Fast forward to 2026 and he’s one of the best quarterbacks in the country and Texas Tech had to plan for situation in which he misses the whole season.

Earlier this week, the NCAA ruling was overturned by a judge, ruling him eligible for the 2026 season.

Izzo is not happy about it.

Everyone was shocked, disappointed, and angry that he was able to break the rules egregiously and then have a judge grant him eligible for the upcoming season. Izzo wasn’t exactly shocked given the state of the NCAA these days and courts interfering with rulings, but he aired out some frustrations

“I’m not real happy with it. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous,” Izzo said with a stoic look on his face.

Izzo speaks for all of us. He speaks for Michigan State fans, Michigan fans, and just college sports fans who all feel a sense of helplessness watching the NCAA crumble. I’m sure there was more that he wanted to say but he kept it PG for the media. Behind the scenes, I’m sure he’s pretty critical of the situation and I doubt Joey McGuire is going to be invited to any Izzo coaching get-togethers any time soon.

The Sorsby situation has really put a bad taste in college football fans’ mouths and Izzo considers himself a huge football guy so it makes sense that he feels some type of way about it.

I’m expecting this saga to play out into the season and I wouldn’t be all that shocked to see Sorsby miss the season like he was originally supposed to.
