The Aiden Sherrell dream looks to be dead for Michigan State basketball

We can probably cross Aiden Sherrell off the list.

Before he ever entered the transfer portal, Michigan State basketball fans were hopeful that Tom Izzo would make a run at Aiden Sherrell this offseason.

There were rumors circulating about him potentially entering the transfer portal and he even gave a quote about his future with the program following the Tide's last game that didn't make Alabama fans feel all that good about keeping him in Tuscaloosa. He said that the current plan was to stay with Alabama, but in today's NIL and transfer portal world, we all knew what that meant.

Sherrell entered the portal shortly after it opened last week, and everyone was talking about top contenders for the Alabama big man who's originally from Detroit being Michigan State and a handful of others.

The Spartans did get into the mix, but he scheduled a trip to Indiana over the weekend. Many believed the Hoosiers were Michigan State's biggest threat, and that turned out to be true.

The rumor now is that Sherrell received an offer from Indiana that he couldn't refuse on his visit and he told Michigan State that he would no longer be taking a trip to East Lansing like he had originally planned. Just 24 hours after it looked like Michigan State might have momentum with a reported "locked" visit and him leaving Bloomington without committing, the Spartans' dream is dead.

Landing a 6-foot-11 big man from Alabama who can shoot threes and block shots would have been the dream addition to a lineup that's solid 1-4, but now Tom Izzo has to pivot.

Another Michigan State fan portal dream has been dashed

Every single offseason, Michigan State fans get their hopes up for the transfer portal. They expect Izzo to target the perfect missing piece in the portal like every team that wins a national title seems to do. This year, all he needed was a center, so the thought was that he was going to land an elite one and finally spend some money in the portal.

Unfortunately, with Sherrell likely headed to Indiana and Moustapha Thiam hearing from several blue bloods and other top title contenders, it's looking bleak.

Spartan fans have been hopeful in the portal for years only to be let down by an "under-the-radar" transfer who becomes a solid addition but not "the missing piece" that they've been looking for. Fans are asking for more Joey Hauser, Bryn Forbes, and Tyson Walker-caliber transfers but we're getting role players instead.

We'll see if Izzo has any tricks up his sleeve before the portal closes.
