While it wasn't exactly how Tom Izzo and Michigan State basketball imagined it happening, the Spartans saw their run end on Sunday night in the Elite Eight to Auburn, 70-64.
And you can miss me with the "this team just wasn't talented enough" talk because I don't believe that. This team was plenty talented to go to the national title game and win it all. It just didn't have the shooting it needed to really come up with another grind-it-out win against the nation's No. 1 team.
Michigan State just couldn't get anything to fall after taking an 8-6 lead early as Auburn took advantage with a 17-0 run to take a 23-8 lead. The Spartans would storm back to make it a five-point game with just a couple of minutes left in the first half. Auburn would end with a 6-2 run to end the half with a nine-point lead.
They just maintained that in the second half, beating the Spartans by six but really leading by double-digits the entire second half.
Tom Izzo has shown that he still has his fastball, but this loss hurt because it felt like this may have been his closest team ever and they had the perfect depth, toughness, and offensive and defensive efficiency to make a deeper run.
Izzo made it back to deeper runs in March like he said, but it's time to take that next step next year.
Here were some of the reactions from Sunday's loss.

Tough end to a fun ass season. Most enjoyable year of Michigan State hoops in recent memory. Sucks to go out like that but it is what it is

Michigan State’s season ends in the Elite 8.

Hard to be mad at the year if you’re a Spartan.
The standard at MSU is the Final Four. While that wasn’t met, this team reminded people that simply making the tournament isn’t what it’s all about. The ambition & prominence are back.

Thank you Seniors💚
As you can see, no one is really taking this all that tough and it feels like this team did everything to get the fans to buy back in after a handful of stale years. Next season could be really special, especially if Jase Richardson returns.
