Social media dunking on Pat Fitzgerald for harmless post-spring game tradition

Let’s all just relax and have fun.

The 2026 Spring Showcase is in the books and Michigan State fans got a small glimpse of what the first team in the Pat Fitzgerald era will look like.

Unfortunately, rival fans also got a peek into the program.

Following the showcase, Fitzgerald decided to carry on a tradition of a dizzy bat race that dates back to his Northwestern days. It’s just a fun little tradition that builds team chemistry and brings out the kid in all of these student athletes. Every single youth football player did a drill like this during their early days of playing. Why not have a little fun to end the spring?

Rival fans used it as an opportunity to dunk of Michigan State. Obviously the “definitely not obsessed” rivals in Ann Arbor handled this well and didn’t take shots at the Spartans (sarcasm). You almost wouldn’t even realize that Michigan also hosted a spring game on Saturday afternoon that was aired on national TV since they were all taking shots at Fitzgerald and MSU.

Leave it to rival fans to take a fun post-spring game tradition and try to turn it into something embarrassing. It’s clearly easy to dunk on a program that hasn’t made a bowl game since 2021, but if the Spartans were coming off a playoff berth, no one would bat an eye at this.

Welcome to college football fandom in 2026.

Pat Fitzgerald’s Spartans have a lot to work on still

I’m not going to sit here and knock a coach for having a stupid bat race to end spring ball that takes like two minutes and act like he’s not taking things seriously. People need to stop overreacting to everything.

However, I will say that the Spartans have some work to do and Fitzgerald has known that since he took the job. He has a solid foundation on the offensive line, at linebacker, at running back, and at quarterback, but the defensive line was pretty concerning and special teams wasn’t exactly on its ‘A’ game. At least I hope that wasn’t their ‘A’ game.

The good thing about having a lot of post-spring work to do? You have about four whole months to get it done. Fitzgerald is going to get this roster figured out.

Let the student athletes have some fun to end spring ball.
