The Big Ten Hockey award recipients were released on Tuesday and as expected, Michigan State hockey was well represented. Trey Augustine, Isaac Howard, Matt Basgall, and Karsen Dorwart all took home awards after another great season for the Spartans.

Here is a list of all the awards the boys took home:

Trey Augustine: First-team All-Big Ten, Big Ten Goaltender of the Year
Isaac Howard: First-team All-Big Ten, Big Ten Player of the Year, Big Ten scoring champion
Matt Basgall: First-team All-Big Ten, Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree

Karsen Dorwart: All-Big Ten honorable mention

What great accomplishments for the guys above. Dorwart is an All-Big Ten honorable mention for the second year in a row. Howard winning the scoring championship marks the first time that has been done by a Spartan since Taro Hirose did it in 2019. Also, his Big Ten POY win makes him just the third-ever Spartan to win the award joining Hirose and former Spartan goalie Jake Hildebrand.

Basgall narrowly missed winning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. That award went to Minnesota’s Sam Rinzel. Adam Nightingale was also named as a finalist for Big Ten Coach of the Year but that award went to OSU’s Steve Rohlik after their great turnaround this season.

More award honors are potentially in store for Michigan State as well. Goalie Trey Augustine is named as a finalist for the AAU Sullivan Award which goes to the top amateur athlete in the USA. Also, Howard is a semifinalist for the Hobey Baker Award, which is given to college hockey’s most outstanding player.

The laundry list of accomplishments is ever growing. The Spartans are looking to add another trophy to that list as they take on Ohio State for the Big Ten Tournament title this Saturday at Munn Arena. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m. ET and it airs on Big Ten Network.

MSU Hockey has requested all going to the game to wear white as they are going to white out Munn.

The Spartans will then set their eyes on the bigger prize as the NCAA tournament is scheduled to get underway starting next Thursday. The Spartans currently are the No. 1 ranked team in the country and have a shot at the No. 1 overall seed in that tournament. It is an exciting time for Michigan State hockey and it’s good to see the team and staff getting more recognition for what they’ve accomplished so far this year.

Good luck to the team Saturday night and go green.
