Michigan State football has a chance to impact the coaching carousel this week with a win.

Spartan fans are all too familiar with the coaching carousel and after losing Mel Tucker to an unfortunate firing following an off-field incident, Michigan State had to find his replacement and it landed on Jonathan Smith who brought Oregon State out of the gutter over the past few years. He took over a dead program in Corvallis and turned it into a successful one.

And after a slow start to his first season in East Lansing, some fans are jumping off the Smith bandwagon but the thought of another coaching carousel nightmare could turn them off to the program altogether -- at least for a while.

However, Michigan State could impact the coaching carousel this weekend for another program. That program is Purdue who just so happens to be visiting East Lansing on Friday night.

According to a report from On3's Pete Nakos, Friday's Purdue vs. Michigan State football matchup is a "huge game" for Boilermaker head coach Ryan Walters' future.

Whenever you hear a phrase like that, it pretty much means that if Purdue gets embarrassed in East Lansing, his time is likely over in West Lafayette. If he's able to pull off a win over the Spartans or even keep it respectively close as a 1-9 team, he could earn himself another year.

Michigan State fans are hoping for the Purdue embarrassment route.

Obviously no one wants to see a guy get fired from his job, but Michigan State desperately needs to win if it wants to make a bowl game and have any sort of momentum on the side of Jonathan Smith and this coaching staff. A loss could mean second-year hot seat status for the new coach.

A comfortable win on Saturday for the Spartans, however, could spell the end of the Walters era at Purdue. I wonder how many Purdue fans are hoping for that.
