Rumors are swirling that Michigan State could have a last-minute portal entry

This would be a tough last-minute loss.

With the transfer portal closing at 11:59 p.m. ET on April 21, it feels like Michigan State may be out of the weeds and Tom Izzo might not lose a single player to the portal.

That was until rumors started spreading on social media.

There’s some talk on X about a rumored Michigan State portal entry at the last minute with the window closing in a few hours officially.

SpartanHoops DK posted the rumor on Twitter which originated in the Trilly Donovan (super connected source) Discord.

There’s no word on who it might be unless you paid for exclusive access to his Discord where he revealed who the transfer actually is. I don’t have access, but there are a few guesses as to who it might be. It sounds like it might be a backcourt player which makes sense with all the options that the Spartans have there and many believe it’ll be either Divine Ugochukwu or Kur Teng.

I would lean toward one of those two as well, but personally, I’d rather keep the sharpshooter who grew throughout the year, but Ugochukwu was also one of the most improved shooters in the nation.

It can’t be Jordan Scott, in my opinion, because he posted about a pending year two on his social media and his mom just shared “go green” on Tuesday and it’s not going to be an incoming freshman obviously. That makes me think it’s Teng or Ugochukwu. But Jeremy Fears Jr. did just brag about being one of just a few teams without a portal loss earlier in the day, so who knows.

What does Tom Izzo do if he loses a guard?

Losing a member of a loaded backcourt isn’t the worst thing, especially if that means more minutes for incoming McDonald’s All-American Jasiah Jervis, but will Izzo add someone to replace a departing guard in the transfer portal?

I doubt that.

If Izzo does lose someone from the current backcourt, I believe he’s just going to roll into the 2026-27 season with a smaller rotation back there and maybe use that extra scholarship on a second big.

Heck, that could mean a transfer center addition and the return of Carson Cooper. I don’t think this is necessarily the worst news, but it would be unfortunate to lose a key rotational player on a legitimate national title contender — especially if that player can shoot threes.
