Respected NBA draft expert believes Jeremy Fears Jr. will return to Michigan State

Jonathan Wasserman would be shocked if Jeremy Fears left.

Another day has passed with no Jeremy Fears Jr. decision and that just means that we’re getting down to the wire for the All-American point guard to make a decision regarding the NBA draft.

Either Fears returns to Michigan State for his junior season and becomes one of the top returning players in all of college basketball while chasing a national title or he stays in the NBA draft and likely goes in the second round, at best. His dream is to play in the NBA and his dad is really pushing for it, but it doesn’t make a ton of sense for him to depart.

While I may be biased with that opinion, I’m definitely not the only one who holds it.

In fact, one of the most respected NBA draft experts, Jonathan Wasserman, was recently asked in a Hoops HQ article by Andy Katz and Seth Davis about Fears and what he believes his decision will ultimately be. His answer is going to make a lot of Spartan fans happy.

“He’s going to come back.”

Wasserman went on to say that while he doesn’t know what’s going on behind the scenes, he’s not going to be a first-round pick this year and that’s what Fears wants to see. He also said that some guys just don’t want to go to college anymore and would rather spent time in the G-League for a year instead. Fears doesn’t seem like one of those guys, but at this point, who knows.

The consensus from draft experts and NBA executives is that Fears should return to Michigan State for at least one more year to improve his stock. We’ll see if he follows that advice.

Maybe Jeremy Fears is done with college altogether

Fears has been in college for three years already and no one thought he’d be this good after he got shot in the leg during Christmas break during his true freshman year but he’s proven everyone wrong. He wants to continue that trend and make it as an NBA point guard, but all signs are pointing to him waiting at least a year to do that.

But maybe Wasserman was onto something. Maybe Fears is just done with college. He’s been in East Lansing for three years already and if he comes back for a fourth, that means he probably surpasses the amount of time he expected to be at Michigan State.

Of course that’s not entirely his fault as he suffered a major setback as a freshman, but he’s still polishing his game and it doesn’t make a ton of sense to abandon the progress he’s made to fight for a spot in the G-League. He doesn’t strike me as the kind of player who sees his rival win a national title and then leave college for good without trying his hand at a rebuttal.

We’re 48 hours away from a decision and the nerves among Spartan fans are setting in.
