Michigan State made headlines for all the wrong reasons — again — earlier this week.
Trustee Rema Vassar reportedly plans to file a lawsuit against Michigan State that’s worth upwards of $25 million dollars. She has sent a pre-litigation letter to President Kevin Guskiewicz and he has until June 17 to respond or she plans on pursuing the legal route.
Vassar, who has been acting in her own best interests according to anyone familiar with the BoT and Guskiewicz’s parting letter, is planning to sue Michigan State for $25 million for discrimination and violating her first ammendment rights.
According to Vassar’s attorney, she’s pursuing legal action against her fellow board members and the university for reportedly violating board policy to attack her because she’s a Black woman.
While the descrimination is something I can’t speak on because I haven’t been in the room with the trustees, I do believe that this is a last-ditch effort to make one final selfish move before potentially being removed. Since Guskiewicz announced he was leaving for Clemson because of the lack of communication and selfishness of certain board members, Vassar was one of the first trustees singled out publicly. Michigan State fans and alumni want her and whoever Guskiewicz was talking about gone.
Heck, most of us want a complete restart. Get an entirely new board that will act in Michigan State’s best interests. This latest lawsuit confirms the ugly truth that we were all concerned about: Michigan State’s trustees are acting in their own best interests and not the university’s.
Some of these trustees are trying to enrich themselves instead of act and vote in the best interests of Michigan State.
Rema Vassar’s lawsuit is borderline disrespectful
Look, if she feels like she was discriminated against because she’s a Black woman, I can’t say that it’s not true because I’m not in that room with the rest of the trustees, but asking for $25 million is actually disrespectful.
How? All you have to do is look at what the victims of the campus shooting a few years ago settled with Michigan State for to realize that Vassar is overvaluing herself in this lawsuit. Michigan State’s three surviving shooting victims settled for a combined $30 million and the families of the students who didn’t make it settled for $15 million.
To make matters even worse, Michigan State settled with 332 Larry Nassar victims for $500 million which averages about $1.5 million per person. A very modest amount for what they went through.
Vassar believes that she’s worth more than shooting and Nassar victims.
That’s unbelievable for several reasons.
For one, every time her name comes up, it’s in a bad light. She’s been accused by fellow board members, alumni, and even Guskiewicz of acting in her own best interests. Two, she is setting this up to sever any relationship she had with fellow board members. Three, she’s pulling an incredibly selfish move to prove that she’s been wrongly dubbed “selfish” — rather ironic. And four, she voted against the new board ethics policy that prohibits trustees from speaking publicly against a unanimous decision.
The ugly truth is no longer a secret: Michigan State’s Board of Trustees was never acting in the best interest of the university.
