Who could Michigan State football be targeting still in transfer portal?

Just last weekend, Jonathan Smith was at Wayne State talking to young high school athletes about what it takes to become a successful college athlete and what Michigan State football looks for.

Following his appearance, he spoke to the media a little bit.

One of the things he opened up to the media about was the transfer portal and the roster heading into the 2024 season. He was asked about the roster being set heading into the summer and he said that there could potentially be another addition before it's all set.

So with this hint that there will be another addition to the roster from the portal before the 2024 season, the question is, who could that final piece be?

Considering Smith hammered the defensive backfield, offensive line, and linebackers in the transfer portal already, I think he would likely add to either the defensive line or the receiving corps. And looking at the top available players in both position groups, a handful of guys stand out as options.

The first one would be Oregon defensive lineman Johnny Bowens III. The Spartans already landed Ben Roberts from Oregon and Demetrice Martin has a connection to these guys. Maybe Bowens III wants to join forces with Martin as well as his former defensive line mate in East Lansing. He's the No. 3 available transfer in the portal right now.

If the Spartans are looking more toward a receiver, Raymon Cottrell Jr. is the top available pass-catcher in the portal from Kentucky. He actually began his career at Texas A&M in 2023 but transferred to Kentucky in December before hitting the portal again in April. He would have four years of eligibility remaining.

Michigan's Karmello English, UCF's Goldie Lawrence, and Ole Miss' Zakhari Franklin could also be solid options, but I wouldn't be shocked if any of these guys are the additions.

I doubt Smith will be adding someone who can't have a major impact at either position.

If I had to choose, I'm hoping it's either Bowens, Cottrell, or English. All are top 10 players in the portal right now.
