Updating all 13 Michigan State basketball players' performances at Moneyball
6. Szymon Zapala
Next up is an interesting one, transfer big man Szymon Zapala. Most Michigan State fans were hoping for a bigger fish when it came to the transfer portal, but Izzo went and snagged a big 7-footer in Zapala.
Going into Moneyball, I knew the least about Zapala’s game, so I was very interested to see how he did. In his first three games, Zapala scored 12, 16 and 12 points. And honestly, he didn’t really do anything special that excited me.
That changed on Thursday when he went off for 24 points and four 3-pointers. Yes, you read that correctly, Michigan State has another 7-footer (Xavier Booker is close enough) on their roster who can hit the outside shot.
This should immediately earn Zapala some playing time this year as neither Cooper nor Kohler are able to hit shots from the perimeter. So if Zapala is able to pair an average post game with some solid defense, he could really disrupt what we thought would be a standard playing rotation of Cooper and Kohler down low.
