3. Setting the career Big Ten assists record

Now it’s time for Cassius Winston’s greatest individual achievement. It’s one thing to set a school record, and it’s another to set a Big Ten record. But what about breaking a Big Ten record that was held by one of the greatest Spartans of all time?

Before Winston became the Big Ten’s career assist leader, that title was held by Michigan State legend Mateen Cleaves. Cleaves’ record was thought to be unbreakable considering he cleared the next best by 51 assists. But then Winston came along and overtook Cleaves with this stellar assist to Xavier Tillman.

Now remember when I said Cleaves had a massive lead atop the Big Ten all time assist leaderboard? Winston now has an even greater lead over Cleaves with 74 more.

Winston’s 890 career assists may never be broken, but one other thing to consider is that it could’ve been much higher. With Winston not having a Big Ten or NCAA Tournament his senior season, he missed out on a minimum of two games to add to that total. But he could have played in a maximum of nine more games, so this record could have (should have) been even more impressive.
