Michigan State basketball is in the midst of its first overseas trip in nearly a decade as the team is living its best life in Spain. While overseas, the team is playing in three preseason games with the first already taking place on Thursday when Michigan State defeated the Madrid All-Stars 94-87.

But at the end of the day, the wins and losses during this trip really don't matter. What does matter is that every player gets some time on the court to show what they're made of and how much they have improved this offseason.

I'm very excited to watch many of the guys during this trip, but I think the one player I and most of Spartan nation are most excited to watch is Jeremy Fears Jr. Now that Fears is back to full health, I want to see how ready he is to take over this team as Michigan State's star point guard.

And by the sounds of it, Tom Izzo is ready to see what Fears is capable of as well.

Izzo recently spoke with the media and shared what he is hoping to see from his redshirt freshman point guard during this trip.

"I want to see him run a team, which I know he can do."

And running a team is exactly what Fears did during the Spartans' first game on Thursday.

Fears wasn’t the leading the scorer on Thursday, but he still added a solid 10 points. Even more impressively Fears went on a mini 6-0 run by himself to close out the game in the fourth quarter.

On top of that, Fears led the team with six assists as well.

Sure it’s only been one game, but I think Fears has already shown Izzo what he was hoping to see. Fears always had control of the offense when in the game and he did not make many careless mistakes. It was obvious the team was at their best when he was at point guard, which is impressive considering the year Fears has had.

Michigan State still has two games remaining on their trip and I hope Fears can keep this level of play up. If so, it may be time to officially crown Fears as the next elite point guard in Izzo’s era.
