The overreactions about Aidan Chiles are ridiculous

People need to take a chill pill.

Michigan State football came up short against Boston College on Saturday night, 23-19, which is the first time you could say that during the Jonathan Smith era. The Spartans move to 3-1 which by no means is a bad thing and is a record we all would have gladly signed up for two months ago, but MSU was so close to beginning 4-0 during their "rebuild" season.

That is why this loss is so hard to overcome.

Michigan State fans are rightfully upset after that loss because how could they not be? The Spartans were arguably the better team most of the game which is why I am sitting here with a pit in my stomach after thinking MSU would still win with a few minutes remaining in the game.

Blaming Aidan Chiles

Whenever a team loses a hard-fought game, the quarterback typically shoulders a lot of the blame. That is definitely the case with Aidan Chiles in the hours after the Spartans' loss to Boston College and I would bet any amount of money that Chiles is blaming himself as well.

But there is a difference between giving Chiles some blame for the loss and calling for his head. It's the latter of those two options that some fans are actually claiming that is just outright ridiculous.

Yes, Chiles needs to be better

I won't sit here and tell you that Chiles had a perfect game on Saturday, if he did then Michigan State would've won by at least two scores. But Chiles struggled at times, especially in the second half.

His interception during Michigan State's first second-half drive was ugly, and his third and final pick on the final drive when he unnecessarily floated a ball into double coverage was tough to watch. But for all the bad things Chiles did on Saturday, he had an equal amount of impressive moments.

Chiles was electric on his feet, especially during the second half. My head is still spinning after he somehow escaped heavy pressure and turned a surefire sack into a huge gain.

But as I mentioned, Chiles' mistakes arguably are at least part of the reason Michigan State lost this game. However, the section of the fanbase calling for Chiles to be benched is just utter insanity.

Who would you rather have at QB instead?

First, let me ask who else you would rather have at quarterback. Tommy Schuster? He isn't making those heroic throws or using his feet to make heart-stopping escapes from the pocket. The two true freshman quarterbacks? No offense but I hope nobody is suggesting them right now. So even though Chiles did struggle, none of the backup options can do what Chiles can do, even if they would potentially make a couple fewer mistakes.

But the one thing you need to factor in is the future of the program. Michigan State was never going to compete for a Big Ten championship this season. I hate to be the one to break that news to you, but even a win against Boston College wasn't going to change that fact. The one goal for this season was growth and development for future seasons, and Chiles is the one who needs that the most.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride

Chiles is the future when it comes to the quarterback position. It's not Schuster who won't even be in East Lansing after this season or the two freshman quarterbacks. And in all honesty, we should be excited that Chiles is the future at quarterback because I believe he is that talented.

When Chiles is on I 100 percent believe he is up there with the best quarterbacks in the Big Ten. Consistency however is the one thing not there quite yet, but that will come with time. Let me remind you that Chiles is only 19 years old and this was only his fourth career start. Sure we can expect more, but those facts put into perspective where our realistic expectations should be for Chiles.

So those fans who are calling for Chiles' head need to relax and enjoy the ride this season. Chiles is going to continue to have jaw-dropping moments this year as well as some "What are you doing?" moments. And that's OK, that is all part of his growth that he will go through this season.

So instead of expecting him to be a perfect quarterback already, let's enjoy the process. Let's enjoy the growing pains this season from Chiles because I promise it will be worth it in the years to come.
