3. Smith discusses next steps with the roster

The last thing that I thought was interesting from Jonathan Smith's press conference was his discussion on the future of the roster.

With the transfer portal dominating the college football world right now, it is important to get an idea of where each of your players are at and if some are debating entering the portal. The last thing you want is to be surprised by one of your star players entering the portal, but it sounds like Smith and his staff are doing everything they can to avoid this from happening.

Not only is each player meeting with their position coach, but Smith will be meeting with each player as well. This is huge for many reasons because it shows just how much the coaching staff cares about each individual player. So if there are guys on the fence about transferring, this could be the difference between them doing so or staying put. Smith and his staff will also get a chance to recruit those players to stay in East Lansing, but if the player is set on leaving the staff can pivot and start looking for their replacement in the portal right away if needed.

Michigan State football is officially back, and I haven't been this excited for the regular season in quite some time. Summer recruiting is going to be the main focus now for a few months, but the fall season will be here before we know it, and I think this team has a chance to shock a lot of people.
