Surprise alumni visitor at Michigan State basketball’s game in Valencia
By now we all know that Michigan State basketball is traveling throughout Spain on their preseason exhibition trip. Not only are they getting to play three tune up games before they head home to finish off the offseason, but the Spartans are also getting to tour the country and make some new memories as a team.
One thing however that wasn’t expected was the team running into a former Michigan State legend. Outside of some of the players families traveling with the team, there’s pretty much zero Michigan State presence on this trip. That however wasn’t the case on Sunday when the team dominated the Valencia All-Stars 105-59.
That’s right, former Michigan State legend Matt Costello was in attendance for the team’s game in Valencia. This may seem very random, but it turns out Costello is currently playing professionally in Valencia.
Unfortunately Costello did not lace it up for the game on Sunday (which would’ve been really awesome), but his presence alone is really cool to see.
Costello was a beast for Michigan State down low and was one of the biggest reasons for the team’s success during his time in East Lansing. During his four years from 2012-2016, Costello helped lead the team to two Big Ten tournament championships as well as the 2015 Final Four.
Costello had his best season by far his senior year when he nearly averaged a double-double with 10.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. Also, who could forget his most iconic moment off the court when he bear hugged Tom Izzo after a huge win over a top 10 Maryland team?
The Michigan State basketball family runs deep, and this is yet another example of the elite culture we’ve come to know under Izzo.
What former player will show up to a game next? Your guess is as good as mine, but I wouldn’t be surprised if someone else randomly attended their final game in Barcelona on Tuesday.
