Should Michigan State basketball target Colorado transfer Eddie Lampkin?
A big name hit the transfer portal on Wednesday and Michigan State basketball fans immediately became invested. While Eddie Lampkin isn't exactly the superstar center we're all looking for, he would be an immediate upgrade at the position.
On3 Michigan State reporter Kenny Jordan tweeted out that he's a name we should "monitor" and that stirred up plenty of debate.
Following that tweet, some fans were all for Lampkin at Michigan State because of his aggressive play style and the fact that he can actually score in the post. He averaged 10.6 points and 7.0 rebounds per game this past season at Colorado after transferring in from TCU. He was expected to have much bigger numbers but didn't quite live up to his potential.
Justin Thind of 247Sports immediately came out and said that Michigan State will likely not pursue Lampkin even though the Spartans made a push last offseason. And it makes sense.
Lampkin would be at his third school in three years and that's exactly what Tom Izzo tries to avoid when it comes to the transfer portal. That's what he talks about when he knocks the portal. So that alone would likely disqualify the Spartans here.
But let's just say that Izzo wasn't worried about that. Would Lampkin be the quick fix Michigan State needs in the post? Well, he shot 58 percent from the floor and averaged 10.6 points per game in 27.8 minutes. That kind of production was missed this year, but he doesn't stretch the floor at all which has to be a priority and he's not an elite defender, averaging just 0.1 blocks per game as a 6-foot-11 center. That's why I doubt this is a fit.
Sure, he'd add to the offense, but to play for Izzo, you have to be effective on both ends of the floor and I don't think five blocks in 37 games as a 6-11, 265-pound center is going to cut it.
Do I think the Spartans should be more selective than going after Lampkin? I do.
