Series history for Michigan State football vs. Maryland
I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to rinse this gross taste out of mouth that’s been there since Michigan State football’s 16-10 week one win over Florida Atlantic, and what better way to do that than going up against and hopefully beating a Big Ten opponent in their house.
Michigan State travels to Maryland for its Big Ten opener at 3:30 p.m. ET with a massive opportunity in front of them. The Spartans are sizable underdogs, but I still love their chances to get off to a perfect 2-0 start with an early conference win.
But before the game gets here, let’s take a brief look at the series history between these two Big Ten programs.
Series history vs. Maryland
Michigan State boasts a very solid 10-4 all time record against Maryland throughout their history. This includes a 6-3 record since the Terps became an official Big Ten program ahead of the 2014 season.
The Spartans, however, haven’t been very good against Maryland the past few seasons as the Terrapins are on a current two-game winning streak. This includes a dominant 31-9 victory last year in Spartan Stadium and a 27-13 win at Maryland in 2022.
To find Michigan State’s last win against Maryland we have to go back to 2021 when you guessed it, Kenneth Walker put on a show. Walker scored two touchdowns and ran for 143 yards in the Spartan’s 40-21 win. But it was actually Payton Thorne who had the best game as he threw for four touchdowns and 287 yards.
Overall, the Spartans have found good success at Maryland as they boast a 3-2 record in road games at College Park.
Michigan State will have its hands full on Saturday against a Maryland team that looked very good in their 50-7 week one win over UConn. However, I know Jonathan Smith is ready to make a statement for the first time as Michigan State’s head coach so hopefully he’s able to turn the tide in this rivalry on Saturday.
