Predicting Michigan State basketball’s starting 5 after trip to Spain
Well folks, we have officially reached the dreaded point in the offseason where we no longer get to watch Michigan State basketball until the regular season arrives.
We recently got to watch the team play in Moneyball throughout July and most recently during their trip to Spain over the last week and a half, and how lucky we were to get all of this action in the offseason. But all good things must come to an end, and now we have to wait until November to get our next dose of MSU hoops.
With all of this extra Michigan State basketball we’ve experienced this offseason we now know more about the team in mid-August than we usually do. So that allows us to make more accurate projections for the season ahead like who the starting five could be.
So here is who I project the starting five for Michigan State will be now that their overseas trip to Spain is complete.
Point guard: Jeremy Fears Jr.
Heading into Spain I viewed the point guard position as a heated battle between Jeremy Fears Jr. and Tre Holloman. However, in my eyes that battle is over with Fears coming out on top.
No disrespect to Holloman at all because I still think he is a great player, but Fears has the potential to be special.
I saw everything I needed to see from Fears in this trip from being able to run the offense efficiently, getting out in transition to push the tempo and score a lot of points when needed. No he wasn’t perfect, especially in Michigan State’s final game when he had some turnover issues, but that’s to be expected with someone still so young and coming off a major injury.
But the potential is clearly there for Fears that he is now an easy choice for me as Michigan State’s starting point guard this year.
