Michigan State hockey will play outdoor game at Wrigley Field

It’s been quite some time since there has been any sense of excitement towards the Michigan State hockey program, but that changes quickly after the program wins its first Big Ten regular-season title and tournament championship in program history.

Recruiting is also at an all-time high for the program as well, so even though the team lost some pieces from last year’s championship team they should be just as good if not better this season.

However, the one thing that is lacking in the college hockey season is the schedule. There are only seven Big Ten hockey schools, so the schedule can get pretty boring at times as Michigan State plays all six teams four times during the season. But next year’s schedule just got a huge boost for one of those conference games.

Michigan State has announced that it will take on Wisconsin on Jan. 4 at Wrigley Field in Chicago. This game will be part of an outdoor series of Big Ten hockey games including three men’s games in total and one women’s game.

There isn’t anything much better than outdoor hockey. Something about a small ice rink being put in the middle of a massive baseball or football field surprisingly looks cool. And the fact that Michigan State gets to do it next year against a marquee opponent like Wisconsin makes it even better.

Wisconsin finished second in the Big Ten last season, and the Spartans clinched the conference championship in Wisconsin during the final weekend of the regular season. So these two teams meeting at a historic outdoor venue like Wrigley Field is amazing.

I’ve only ever been to a Michigan State hockey game in East Lansing and in Detroit, but this feels like a game that is a must to attend. So to all you massive hockey fans out there, I hope to see you at this game in January.
