Michigan State hockey will face Michigan with trip to Frozen Four on the line
Friday night was a big one for Michigan State hockey. The Spartans played in their first NCAA Tournament game in years and they were looking for their first win in the event since 2008.
Down 4-2 in the second period, Michigan State needed a world-class comeback to beat Western Michigan. As the No. 1 seed, this was a shock, but Western is no slouch. They had a great season and everyone called this a tough draw for the Spartans when the region was announced. Getting Western Michigan, North Dakota, and Michigan in the same region was brutal.
But the Spartans didn't panic when down 4-2 and instead scored a goal early into the third and then tied things up on a Karsen Dorwart goal with under a minute to play and Trey Augustine pulled.
Overtime saw a much more motivated Michigan State team as they came out faster, stronger, and just overall more aggressive and won the game nine minutes into the extra period. The goal led to Michigan State's second straight overtime win -- the last one was against Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament title game.
Speaking of Michigan, the Spartans will face the Wolverines for the sixth time this season on Sunday with a trip to the Frozen Four on the line after they upset North Dakota on Friday night.
You know what they say, beating a team five times in a single season is tough to do (OK, maybe I actually exaggerated that saying). Michigan State will face the Wolverines on Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. ET. A win would send the Spartans to their first Frozen Four since 2007 when they won it all.
