Through two weeks of play, Michigan State football is turning some heads.

While there have been some surprise teams around college football like Boston College or Northern Illinois, the Spartans have flown somewhat under the radar to begin 2-0 and it looks like they're not done yet. Michigan State had a shaky opener against FAU but then rebounded to take down Maryland on the road while putting up nearly 500 yards of total offense.

It was quite the contrast from game one to game two. And that's OK. Teams get better.

Even though the Spartans did have that forgettable opener against the Owls, ESPN thinks highly of Jonathan Smith's start. In fact, the oft-criticized FPI says that Michigan State has the fifth-best resume in college football through two weeks.

Ahead of the Spartans are Northern Illinois, Texas, Cal, and Georgia. All four of those teams have a better win, but Michigan State is right there. Northern Illinois beat Notre Dame on the road, Texas took down Michigan in Ann Arbor, Cal went to Auburn and beat the Tigers, and Georgia dominated Clemson in the season opener.

But there's Smith's Spartans at No. 5 after beating a tough Maryland team that many believe will be a tricky out in the Big Ten this season -- also, we have to remember that Maryland in September is basically Georgia.

All jokes aside, this is a good sign for the Spartans and it could mean that good things are on the horizon. The upcoming schedule is an absolute gauntlet, though. We'll see just how good the resume is in about a month.
