Michigan State football may sneakily have the best QB room in the Big Ten
Elite quarterback play is something that Michigan State football has been missing for quite some time now. Ever since Connor Cook graduated after the 2015 season we’ve been patiently waiting for the next great quarterback to lead Michigan State back to the top of the Big Ten.
While we won’t know if the current quarterbacks on the roster will live up to what Cook and others have accomplished at Michigan State, one thing we can be confident in is that the Spartans may just have the best quarterback room in the Big Ten.
We all know the elite potential that Aidan Chiles has. Will he live up to the hype? We’ll find out in a few short months, but so far everything points towards Chiles being the best Michigan State quarterback since Cook.
But in order to have the best quarterback room in the Big Ten, you have to have depth at the position, and Michigan State’s backup is about as good as you could hope to have.
Surprisingly, Michigan State transfer quarterback Tommy Schuster leads the returning quarterbacks in the Big Ten in completion percentage from a season ago. Now I know you can’t judge a quarterback based off that one stat, but the rest of Schuster’s stats fit the bill.
Over Schuster’s five seasons at North Dakota, he has amassed 9,055 passing yards and 63 passing touchdowns. Schuster also has a career 67.1 completion percentage as well.
Now I know what you’re thinking, these stats don’t mean anything since it was in weaker division of football. But that’s a lazy take in my opinion. College football is college football, you have to be good to excel at any level. And these stats from Schuster are about as good as they come.
So even though Schuster likely won’t play this fall, Michigan State is very fortunate to have him as a backup for this season. It’s not often you can have a three year starting QB as your backup with nearly 10,000 career passing yards. So even though that came in a lower division of college football, the experience Schuster has is immense.
So if the worst scenario happens and Chiles gets hurt, Michigan State will be able to confidently put in Schuster instead of one of the two true freshman. That’s how you know you have an elite quarterback room, when you have two guys who you’d be more than comfortable being the starter.
And that’s exactly what Michigan State has this season.
