Michigan State football: Jonathan Smith knocked first official visit weekend out of the park
Jonathan Smith has only been in town for a couple of weeks, but he's already having a major impact on Michigan State football recruiting. It's good to finally have a head coach in charge who can get the job done on the trail for the first time in months.
It was a weird time for the program with no full-time head coach in place from September until late-November, but the Smith hire has gotten things back on track.
And over the weekend of Dec. 8, Smith had an opportunity to make an impression on a number of high school recruits and one major transfer. Guys like Nick Marsh, Aidan Chiles, Wyatt Hook, and a number of other top targets were on campus and, by all accounts, it seems like Smith knocked it out of the park.
The weekend was so good, in fact, that it has already yielded commitments from three-star running back Makhi Frazier and the aforementioned Hook (a three-star tight end).
Not just that, but 247Sports insider Justin Thind placed eight crystal balls in favor of the Spartans to land some recent visitors as well as other guys who are buying into Smith
It's impressive to see him have this type of early recruiting success despite just taking over. He's not getting the most highly-rated guys, but we have to remember it's very late in the cycle and most of the top-rated recruits are already committed elsewhere. He's filling out the class with guys who will grow and develop under him and his staff.
While the recruiting class may not be in the top 25, or even close, Smith is salvaging the disaster that Mel Tucker left behind. Plus, landing Chiles and some other high-level transfers will help.
This turnaround shouldn't take too long.
