When Jonathan Smith was hired to be the next head coach of Michigan State football, he knew he had to bring Jim Michalczik with him. He was one of his best assistants at Oregon State and one of the top offensive line coaches in the country.

Heck, Michalczik is credited for creating one of the best offensive lines in the country at Oregon State which is no small task given the state of the program when he took over.

And now, he's at Michigan State trying to improve an offensive line that had been worked on for years under Mel Tucker and Chris Kapilovic. Those two struggled to trot out an adequate line and the players up front just never seemed to improve under their coaching.

That's going to change under Michalczik.

And the quality of the offensive line is already improving with Ethan Boyd, Kristian Phillips, Geno VanDeMark, and Brandon Baldwin all returning from the transfer portal, Rustin Young committing to the Spartans via the 2024 class, and now All-Pac-12 lineman Tanner Miller transferring in from Oregon State.

To say this is a welcomed addition would be a major understatement and thinking about an offensive line with Miller in the middle at center and guys like VanDeMark, Boyd, and Baldwin potentially starting next to him is intriguing. This could legitimately be the best line the Spartans have had in years.

On top of that, Young is coming in as a four-star and All-American prospect and Stanton Ramil and Cole Dellinger are entering their second seasons with the program as redshirt freshmen.

The excitement level for this offensive line is rising.
