Michigan State Football: 3 takeaways from Jonathan Smith's first month as head coach
1. Smith isn't afraid to use the transfer portal
Michigan State has received six transfer portal commitments so far with seemingly more on the horizon after the bowl season. Not only is Jonathan Smith taking transfer portal guys, but each and every one of the six taken so far has a chance to be a major contributor next fall.
Smith closed on Aidan Chiles, who is considered to be one of the top transfer portal quarterbacks. He also brought in Jack Velling who led the nation in touchdowns for tight ends this past season. Jordan Turner had a nice career at Wisconsin as a linebacker and looks to be in the rotation.
Smith in his first month has shown he will embrace the portal instead of shy away from it. This is good news for Michigan state fans as the new era of college football requires the use of the portal to patch holes in the roster.
