Michigan State football has somewhat of a controversy at the running back position, and I think this is something most did not expect to see happen. The expectation was for Nate Carter to be the dominant lead back with Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams still getting a lot of carries but being the second option.

That hasn’t been the case.

This “controversy” by no means is a bad thing because Lynch-Adams has played a lot better than expected. It also needs to be pointed out that Carter has still played very well. This is just more of a case of Michigan State having two solid options at the same position.

Some fans are having issues getting over this as they still think Carter should be the lead back and anything short of that means he hasn’t been very good. But that in my opinion is the furthest thing from the truth, and it sounds like Jonathan Smith agrees as well.

"It was mostly by series and play calls. We’re gonna have games like that, it wasn’t a scheme design."

So there you have it, Smith and his staff aren’t viewing this as one guy versus the other, their staff is handling this on a game-by-game basis. Actually, it sounds more like a play-by-play basis.

So this means Michigan State will likely ride the hot hand each game. So if Carter is playing extremely well he’ll get the bulk of the carries and vice versa. But the important thing to note here is that there is no controversy in the running back room. Both guys have played extremely well and have had their fair share of elite moments already this season.

So for now, instead of focusing on who’s going to be the featured back this season, let’s just enjoy that Michigan State has two elite options that any team in the country would be lucky to have.
