Jeremy Fears just received the best news possible with medical redshirt
Jeremy Fears has been on the minds of all Michigan State basketball fans since last December, unfortunately it wasn’t for reasons we would hope for.
As you all know, Fears suffered a gunshot wound to his leg last December, ending his season immediately. Throughout the road of Fears’ recovery, one question on everyone’s mind was if he would be granted another year of eligibility. Tom Izzo said he would push for it, but you never know what the NCAA will do.
However, Fears (and Michigan State in general) received the best news possible on Wednesday according to 247Sport’s Justin Thind.
The NCAA has officially given Fears a medical redshirt for the 2023-24 season, meaning this past season won’t count against his four years of eligibility. This means we still have four more years of Fears in East Lansing and he could play until the 2027-28 season.
Now who knows if he’ll actually stay at MSU for that long or if he’ll go pro early, but this is massive news for both Fears and the program. Fears only played in 12 games last season, recording a career-high 10 assists in his last game. Unfortunately, his season ended there, but Fears showed us many glimpses of the elite player he can be. So not only does it appear he’s getting closer to 100 percent again, but he’ll be able to spend an extra season at Michigan State if he wishes.
It’s hard to ever give the NCAA props as they routinely make questionable decisions, but man am I thankful for them today. Fears is the definition of a Spartan and he has the chance to become an all-time great at Michigan State.
Fears’ has a chance to have a special story arch, and I can’t wait to see how he bounces back this coming season.
