How many scholarships does Michigan State football have left for 2024?
Twenty-four new faces are coming to East Lansing this season from the transfer portal. That's right, Jonathan Smith and Michigan State football have landed two dozen players from the portal and a number of them have come this spring before and after the May 1 window closed.
While there are 24 newcomers from the portal coming in, there were also about three dozen players exiting via transfer. The 24 incoming transfers were necessary and Smith has done a good job.
On top of the 24 transfers, Michigan State has a 21-man recruiting class coming in which means there will be 45 (!!) new faces on the roster next season. That's an insane number and it's pretty much half the roster. This entire team is going to look different from the starting quarterback all the way to the long-snapper.
So with this crazy roster turnover, the question of "how many spots are left?" is begging to be answered, especially after the Spartans went on a tear in the portal over the past two weeks.
Thankfully, SpartanTailgate crunched the numbers and has our answer.
According to SpartanTailgate, Michigan State has about four spots left ahead of the 2024 season after landing Nikai Martinez, Jeremiah Hughes, and Semaj Bridgeman over the weekend.
Do we think Smith will utilize these final spots? I'd be surprised if he didn't, but he also has to be selective here because there aren't many priority targets left in the portal. There are some positions he could address following all of these additions, including offensive line, receiver, and maybe one more safety. Other than that, this team has regenerated some depth via the portal.
And the staff may not be done yet.
