Former Michigan State football TE Matt Seybert signs with UFL team
Exciting news coming out of the world of former Michigan State football players on Thursday.
Just days after former MSU Kicker Matt Coghlin resigned with the Memphis Showboats, another former Spartan gets his shot at UFL action this spring. That is none other than former tight end Matt Seybert.
It was announced this afternoon by UFL insider James Larsen on twitter that Matt has signed with the San Antonio Brahmas.
The newest Brahma spent time most recently with the Pittsburgh Maulers in the USFL before suffering an injury that sidelined him for much of the 2022 season. The Maulers did not survive the USFL/XFL merger in 2023 so that left Matt out of the UFL picture for the time being. He has since been working out, rehabbing, and staying ready for a chance to continue playing.
That chance arrived today when Matt was offered by San Antonio. Matt confirmed the news with a tweet from himself as well.
Seybert is extremely excited for the chance to reunite with San Antonio offensive coordinator AJ Smith who was Matt’s offensive coordinator when he spent time in the Spring League right after COVID-19 started. Those games aired on FS1 during the pandemic and lead to Matt landing a camp invite from the Los Angeles Chargers prior to the 2021 season.
The former tight end spoke about that experience and some of his USFL times in an interview with Spartan Shadows. Check out that interview here. He is hopeful to continue playing football and perhaps get another shot at the NFL some day.
Congratulations to Matt. All of the hard work and dedication is paying off. We here in Spartan Nation are behind you and wishing you the best. Go Green.
