Former Michigan State football QB Katin Houser loses starting battle at East Carolina
While a few other former Michigan State football quarterbacks will be starting at quarterback in Week 1 of the 2024 season, Katin Houser will start the season as QB2.
After a long battle this offseason, Houser reportedly lost the battle for the starting job with Jake Garcia.
While this may seem like an upset because East Carolina brought in Houser to compete for the starting job this offseason, Garcia was a former top-50 recruit in the 2021 class. He's no slouch and was ranked No. 48 overall in 2021 and he was the No. 8 quarterback. He was expected to be a star at the collegiate level but never panned out at Miami and then transferred to Missouri where he was the backup in 2023.
Now in 2024, Garcia beat out Houser for the starting job and it's not like the battle is completely over. Just because he won the job over Houser doesn't mean that he's going to keep it.
This battle is going to likely stretch throughout the season and if Garcia struggles, Houser will take over and become potentially the fourth former Michigan State quarterback to start in 2024. The other three are Sam Leavitt (Arizona State), Payton Thorne (Auburn), and Noah Kim (battle not decided at Coastal Carolina).
It's hard not to root for Houser because he was such a fan favorite during his short stint in East Lansing and fans believed that he was the future. So even though he decided to transfer, he still has some fans in East Lansing who will be rooting him on.
Unfortunately, that will have to wait until after Week 1.
