As we all know, Michigan State football is going through a bit of a rebuilding phase. A few years ago, we were all riding high, thinking MSU had its coach after an 11-2 Peach Bowl-winning season in which Kenneth Walker III won the Doak Walker Award.

Two subpar, at best, seasons later and the Spartans are already on their next head coach following the unfortunate exit by Mel Tucker in September.

Jonathan Smith has taken over and, by all accounts, he feels like the perfect hire. He was graded by most major outlets as an 'A' hire as Michigan State got a ton of praise for the move. He turned Oregon State around and he'll have more resources in East Lansing with a less intense turnaround needed.

Smith was able to bring in some new talent (Aidan Chiles) while also retaining a major core of players from last year's team. One of the most important returnees is Dillon Tatum. And his mindset going into the 2024 season is perfect.

"(The) overall attitude for the spring... prove it," Tatum says in the video below.

I love that attitude. You have to prove that you're more than just a 4-8 or 5-7 football team. All the talk in the world isn't going to change people's minds about the Michigan State football program's recent fall from grace but they're going to have to prove it.

Tatum went on to say that the success of the other Michigan State programs (hockey, gymnastics, soccer) motivates him even more to get the job done this year. He wants to join in on the fun.

It sounds like Smith is winning players over and they're buying in.
