Deep dive into 4 Michigan State basketball players' recent NBA contract extensions
2. Gary Harris, Orlando Magic
Next to receive a new contract was Gary Harris, who signed a two-year, $15 million extension to stay with the Orlando Magic.
Harris will be entering his 11th season in the NBA, which is probably the reason why his contract is for only two years. This isn’t a knock on him as a player at all, but father time eventually catches up with everyone and the Magic are likely thinking that could happen to Harris soon.
But regardless of that, getting another contract at Harris’ age is a huge accomplishment. Orlando is coming off their best season in a while where they finished fifth in the Eastern Conference, so they clearly have their eyes on making a deep run in the playoffs next season.
This will be Harris’ fifth year with Orlando, so clearly they like what they see in him still today both as a player and veteran leader. Harris averaged 6.9 points per game on an efficient 37.1% from beyond the arc last year, so at the very least Orlando views him as a solid role player who can also be a leader for their young guys.
