As Michigan State football has gone through their spring practice schedule, we have heard about many players and positions who have been impressive so far. However, one group we haven't heard much about are the linebackers.

That all changed on Tuesday as new defensive coordinator Joe Rossi has been extremely impressed with the group. In fact, it very well might be the best linebacker group he has ever worked with.

Joe Rossi has been extremely impressed with the linebackers

One of the most important positions on the football field, especially on defense, are the linebackers. They are called the quarterback of the defense for a reason. So this is a position group that is extremely important to the team's success.

Rossi has taken notice of this group, sharing something he hasn't been able to say about any linebacker group in his coaching career. Rossi said, "I feel like anyone in the linebacker room can play and contribute. I haven't said that much and I'm in my 24th or 25th year."

Rossi continued "That linebacker room is top-notch."

It’s no secret that the Spartans' defense has been rough in recent years. Even during MSU’s magical 2021 season the defense left a lot to be desired. So if the team is going to take a big step forward under Smith, it starts on defense.

And by all accounts, it sounds like the quarterbacks of the defense have impressed have done just that. The linebacker room has a good mix of veterans, like Cal Haladay and Darius Snow, as well as young incoming talent like Brady Pretzlaff. This group has a chance to be special, which will help the team be very successful as well.

The season can’t get here so enough, and I can’t wait for this team to prove a lot of people wrong.
