The Michigan State football season is fast approaching (67 days but who’s counting) and every MSU fan is hoping the new beginning under Jonathan Smith is a positive one.

Now we all know that Michigan State likely won’t be competing for a Big Ten championship this year, but that doesn’t mean this season is a waste. Bowl eligibility, improvement each week and getting back to a strong culture are just a few things we can hope for and be excited about this season. But what if I told you an extremely strong season is possible this year?

One analyst at CBS Sports thinks a dominant season is possible for MSU this year, as long as Aidan Chiles is as good as advertised.

CBS Sports analyst Tom Fornelli recently said that Michigan State could go 10-2 this season if Chiles plays to his ceiling. Now I’ll be the first to admit that I thought this was crazy when I first saw this. But then I thought about it for a second and you know what, I completely agree with him.

Chiles has so much untapped potential, so much so that he realistically could be the best quarterback in the Big Ten. But even that might not be good enough for a 10-2 season, but recent history tells us it is possible.

Remember Kenneth Walker? He joined Michigan State after a two win season and single handedly led the Spartans to a 10-2 regular season record. Now I’m not saying Chiles will be as dominant as Walker was, but his “ceiling” as Fornelli suggested would be that high.

This by no means is a prediction, (because let’s be honest, we may never see another Walker at Michigan State ever again), but there’s no denying that there’s a slim chance it could happen.

And that right there is all the hope I need to get me through these next 67 days.
