It's been a "long time coming" according to first-year Michigan State football coach Jonathan Smith, but Alex VanSumeren is rounding into form.

The redshirt sophomore defensive tackle is having a solid fall camp thus far.

Jim Comparoni of SpartanMag has been hearing nothing but good things around the sophomore defensive tackle and it sounds like VanSumeren is on the verge of a breakout.

We saw Alex's brother, Ben, break out for the Spartans in 2022 and even earn himself a spot on an NFL roster for the 2023 season. It seems like it's now Alex's turn to have a huge season on the Spartans' defense and this is something that fans have been waiting for now for two years. He was expected to be a star after coming in with the 2022 class as the highest-rated commit

As a true freshman, VanSumeren played in just four games and had three tackles, preserving that redshirt because the staff felt like he was a big piece for the future.

As a redshirt freshman, he suffered a season-ending leg injury and was unable to contribute during a nightmarish 4-8 season. That hurt his growth, but it sounds like he's come into fall camp healthy and ready to compete for one of the starting spots at defensive tackle with newcomer and Oregon transfer Ben Roberts.

The excitement for the upcoming season is mounting and when guys like VanSumeren and Roberts are being hyped up by the new staff, it's time to buy in.

I don't know about you, but I'm about to hammer the "over" on wins for 2024.
