3. The defense still has a lot of work to do

I can’t have a takeaway piece about the Spring Showcase without one thing that I didn’t love. Unfortunately, the negative thing that stood out to me was the defense.

MSU fans have gotten used to a lot of bad defense over the past few seasons, and they didn’t look overly improved on Saturday. Just like with my comments about Chiles already, it’s only April, so we can’t really draw too many conclusions this early on. But the defense left a lot to be desired.

Just from the scrimmage portion of the showcase, some moments left me feeling a little nervous. The first drive of the scrimmage saw the Spartans' offense score a touchdown in two plays. Then the first play of the second half was a 75-yard touchdown pass to Nick Marsh.

Maybe the Spartan’s offense is just that good, or maybe the defense is still struggling. I’m leaning toward the ladder of those two options. But like I said, it’s only April so there’s plenty of time to get things figured out on defense, but I personally would’ve loved to see a slightly better outing from the defense.
